| Nancy
Powell
started blacksmithing at the Sooke Regional Museum in 1991. Enchanted
by the noise, smell, dirt and sparks, she forged a career for
herself as an artist. Using a combination of modern and old tools,
she creates her art freehand, without jigs or forms. Nancy hammers
out a wide variety of original pieces, from kitchen and bathroom
fixtures to exquisite mermaids. Since 1999, she has worked her
forge in "the most beautiful blacksmith's shop in the world",
located at Sooke Harbour House. Custom orders are a big part of
Nancy's work, which can be found from Seattle to New York, and
in Australia and Japan. Before becoming a blacksmith, Nancy worked
as a cook at Sooke Harbour House.
