| Lori
Messer
has no formal art education, but was a fabric weaver before she
learned basket weaving from many excellent Pacific Northwest artists,
including some Haida elders. She works exclusively in natural
materials: bark, roots, willow, vines, kelp, rushes, sedges and
grasses. Part of her training included learning how and when to
harvest these materials, and how to prepare them. Lori finds working
with natural materials very challenging, as there is little uniformity
in the material. A part-time artist and full-time Community School
Coordinator, Lori finds her weaving to be a "spiral dance", very
centering and calming, that keeps her sane in a hectic world. |
