Artist blacksmith
This is the title given to all blacksmiths whose work is driven more by creativity and aesthetics than pure function.
I consider myself a blacksmith first and artist second. It is the actual forging process that gives my work its distinctive style.
Steel is a highly malleable medium when hot. I aim to achieve the greatest possible fluidity in my designs, making use of the traditional techniques and skills of my craft to give the projects on which I work a unique style and form.
Blacksmithing differs from most other metal arts in that the forging process allows me to change the entire structure of the material I work with, from the microscopic level to the visual.
By forging the steel, I am creating the shape I wish from within the original material, rather than assembling it from its component parts, as is done by welding or fabrication.
