| Dennis
Demarchi
is a wildlife biologist by training, and a self-taught carver,
who uses his knowledge of his subjects' anatomy and habits, gained
in his formal education, to inform his art. Initially, his main
interest was in wooden decoys but that expanded to include detailed
water birds and trout. There are several of his gulls on display
in Sooke Harbour House, including one flying over the large dining
room table. (The Philips have a strong emotional attachment to
seagull images, as Sinclair's mother loved gulls and the ocean.)
Dennis works primarily with local woods: Western Red Cedar, Rocky
Mountain Juniper and Big-leaf Maple. He was born and raised in
the interior of British Columbia. |
