| Craig
Benson
celebrates and honours the creatures on this planet with his work,
particularly those of the Pacific Northwest. He was born in Vancouver
and moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1987. Carving began
as a hobby for Craig, while he was pursuing an education in environmental
studies. His career in wildlife management and habitat protection
kept him close to his artistic subjects, and helped develop his
appreciation of life's diversity. After several years, his life-long
interest in art and nature called him to change careers. At first
he sought seasonal employment, to support his art, and then became
a full-time carver in 1990. Each of his works is carved from a
single piece of wood or stone. The raw piece and its life force
suggest a creature within; Craig carves to "release" the creature.
His works have been featured in many prestigious exhibitions over
the years and he was one of the first artists to have works included
in the private collection of Sooke Harbour House. (Despite persistent
offers, Frederique will not part with one of his earlier works,
a carved seal that resides in the dining room at Sooke Harbour
House.).
